It has emerged that over 100 teachers who were recently interdicted by their employer Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for seeking transfer from North Eastern region are yet to receive letters inviting them for the hearing of their disciplinary cases.
Shockingly, some teachers have neither received their interdiction letters nor the letters inviting them to appear before the Commission’s disciplinary panel thus far.
On varied dates in the month of September and October 2023, the Commission interdicted close to 200 teachers who were non-locals in the larger North Eastern region for refusing to go back to their respective work stations, asking to be transferred to safer areas.
The Commission started sending the invitation letters at the beginning of November, with Kenya Teachers in Hardship and Arid Areas Welfare Association (KETHAWA) National Secretary Wangonya Wangenye asking the Commission to fast-track the process so that all teachers receive the letters by the end of this week.
“They need time to prepare for their defence and if the teacher hasn’t received a letter indicating the date he/she should appear, they will not adequately prepare for the defence,” Wangenye told Education News, adding: “We are asking the Commission to fast-track the process of giving the letters of invitation so that the respective teachers can prepare for their defence. We don’t want to be ambushed (in) the last minute. The letters should come early and the Commission shouldn’t dilly dally with those letters.”
Wangenye stated that in case the Commission delays further, then it should just reinstate the teachers without having to appear before the Commission.
“TSC should either send (letters) before the end of this week or forego the disciplinary process and reinstate the teachers unconditionally,” said Wangenye.
