Parents, teachers urged to create engaging activities for kids this holiday

The Coordinator of the Mwanyageteinge Heritage Council George Nyakundi has urged parents and teachers to collaborate and devise constructive programs to keep their children engaged during the extended holiday period.

Speaking during the enthronement of branch officials in Nyamache, Kisii County, Nyakundi said that rather than solely blaming adolescents for wayward behavior, it is essential to provide guidance and opportunities for their natural energy and curiosity to be channeled positively.

“Parents should actively involve teachers and the church in designing suitable activities that can captivate young learners without diverting their attention from academics,” he urged.

Additionally, Nyakundi drew attention to the traditional African perspective that considers a child as belonging to the entire community, not just their parents.

Therefore, he encouraged collective responsibility in nurturing and guiding children, rather than isolation.

Nyakundi revealed that his organization has initiated partnerships with schools to establish cultural clubs, aiming to integrate education with societal values.

He emphasized the importance of education rooted in culture, heritage, wealth, and leadership.

In addition, Nyakundi expressed the organization’s commitment to working with schools to preserve indigenous knowledge, combat climate change, and bolster sports.

Highlighting the significance of food security, he called for the revival of 4-K Clubs in schools to nurture agricultural expertise among the youth.

The event featured Nyambane Obino, the Kisii County Director of Culture, Youth, Children, and Gender, who underscored the value of diverse education.

“Young people should explore career paths beyond white-collar jobs, such as performing arts, vocational training, and sports, to secure their livelihoods,” he encouraged.

Furthermore, Obino urged the youth to avoid substance abuse and intoxicants, emphasizing the detrimental effects on their health.
