KNUT points fingers at KUPPET for poaching its members

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has hit out at the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) for what they say is overreaching to take their members teaching in Junior Secondary School (JSS).

According to KNUT’s Woman Representative Mercy Muthoni, it is sad that even after they signed them into their roll, KUPPET went ahead and recruited them.

“It’s an issue that we are pursuing because according to the fundamental freedoms of association, the teachers have a right to belong to unions of their choice; and once the teachers have signed our blue forms, they belong to us,” said Muthoni.

She was speaking during the Eldoret West AGM where she also promised that the matter of teachers stagnating in one job group for too long will be resolved soon.

“These are issues that we are discussing with TSC and the talks are very fruitful and we believe at the end of the talks teachers are going to benefit,” she said, pointing out that most of head teachers now have Diplomas, Degrees, Masters and PhDs.

She applauded Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii for his sound education policy, noting that it shows he has confidence in teachers.

”Our teachers voted for him in great numbers and we have agreed that we also work with the county leaders for the prosperity of the county,” she said.

Governor Bii applauded teachers for standing with him during the electioneering period, promising never to forget them.

“My administration is made up of many teachers. This shows that I respect and have confidence in their leadership. KNUT has been an invaluable force in enhancing working conditions and championing the rights of our dedicated teachers. Their unwavering commitment to the cause of education is commendable,” he remarked.

He said his administration has employed ECDE teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, improved ECDE infrastructure, and gave free milk to ECDE children, among other things.
