KNUT opts for ‘soft diplomacy’ in raising teacher issues with TSC

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has confirmed they will use a non-confrontational approach in dealing with the government and its agency Teachers Service Commission (TSC) as they fight for better terms.

Speaking at Nduru Girls High School during the Gucha South/Etago branch Annual General Meeting (AGM), National Assistant Treasurer Kennedy Nyamwanda said they are in constant amicable dialogue with the Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu and the TSC.

“We are engaged in amicable regular dialogue with these parties which have promised to meet our demands gradually because we realized that war of words will not take us anywhere,” he said, revealing that they have set a date with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the TSC for a formal engagement.

He thanked the government for their recent employment of 56,000 teachers but asked them to add more to ease the workloads in both primary and junior schools.

He lauded the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) because it equips the learner with diversified knowledge that shapes to fit well in the ever-evolving world.

The host Executive Secretary Kennedy Nyakangi Migiro thanked the members for being patient and resilient after the COVID-19 scourge, gladly reporting that the branch had regained its momentum with a total of 800 active members.

He urged newly employed teachers to register with the Union in big numbers to enable it to remain vibrant.

He thanked the teachers from the area for working hard to mould the child holistically, singling out Tabaka, Manywanda, Kimai, Gekong’o and Kenoria for excelling in Music festivals, athletics and ball games to reach the national levels.

The meeting was graced by the former branch Executive Secretary Joseph Moguche Makabe, who thanked teachers for their cooperation during his 10 years of service.

He asked the incoming leaders, who were elected during the meeting, to serve the union with courage, professionalism and focus to enable it to realize its goals.
