Machakos Governor fires CEC for Education over incompetence

Sacked CECM for Education Philip Kilonzo addressing the media at a past event.

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has fired the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education Philip Kilonzo.

This comes barely three weeks after Kilonzo was moved to the Education docket from the Lands docket during a cabinet reshuffle.

According a letter seen by Education News and signed by Ndeti, the CECM was fired for failing to diligently discharge his duties as a Minister.

Wavinya noted that Kilonzo’s position will now be filled by Dr. Consolata Mutisya who has been serving in the Ministry of Roads, Transport and Public Works.

“I have today terminated with immediate effect the contract of Hon. Philip Mutua Kilonzo, currently serving as the County Executive Committee Member (CEC-M) for Education. I have reviewed his performance and concluded that it is untenable for him to continue holding office as a CEC-M,” read the letter in part.

“This decision is informed by the need to uphold high standards of service delivery to the people of Machakos County. We sincerely thank the CECM for his service in county leadership since his appointment into office. I hereby, with immediate effect re-assign CECM Roads, Transport and Public Works Hon. Dr. Consolata Mutisya to the Department of Education,” it read further.

Wavinya had recently stated that she would not hesitate to dismiss non-performing staff.

In July while serving as the CECM for Lands, Kilonzo was involved in a saga where he was accused of grabbing land belonging to a grandmother in Kitimbalu within Machakos sub-county.

Kilonzo is the second CECM to vacate Wavinya’s cabinet after Sky Muasya who resigned three months ago.
