Mombasa county Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has assured stakeholders that his administration will heavily invest in the ECDE sub-sector as a move to boost the education standards in the region.

The governor ordered for the completion of all stalled Early Childhood Education (ECDE) centers.

He stated that he intends to increase the number of learning centers across all sub-counties and thereafter employ more teachers to curb the teacher shortage in the area.

There are currently 98 public ECDE centres in Mombasa with slightly over 10,000 learners.

“Mombasa is the first country to start a feeding programme for ECDE centres,” he noted with pride.

The governor said the county will sponsor the publication and printing of reading and revision materials to all learners.

He also directed the education department to establish an award scheme for the top performers per school to serve as a motivation for students.

“My aim is to ensure that at the end of my tenure, Mombasa county becomes the top performing county in the Coastal region,” he said.

The County Director of Education James Gichungi decried the shortage of monitoring and evaluation officers and vehicles as well as the poor state of schools, further calling upon the county government to look into the matter.
