Invest in rentals to accommodate rising student population, Chuka residents urged

Muraga TTI administration block.

Muraga Technical Training Institute (TTI) Principal Purity Murithi has called on residents to invest more in rental houses, hotels, and cyber cafes in order to accommodate the rising student population at the institution.

The principal said that the institution has witnessed a significant increase in enrollment for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes during the September intake and attributed the surge to the new higher education funding model.

Speaking during a presser at the institution, Murithi said that several students who had initially been offered admission to universities opted to enroll for TVET programmes upon realizing that the courses they desired were available.

She said this shift in preference has led to a remarkable rise in the number of students joining TVET colleges.

“The sudden increase in enrollment has created a housing shortage in the vicinity as more learners are streaming into the institution,” she said.

Murithi said that they have been consulting with residents who own land in the locality in a bid to have them invest in rental houses.

She also challenged the locals who own plots to ensure that they build modern and decent hotels where they can sell food and drinks at affordable prices.

“I also urge the residents to invest in internet and photocopy equipment to assist teachers to produce and reproduce academic papers and other vital documents needed in school,” said the Principal.

She added: “I strongly advise parents to encourage their children to choose nearby learning institutions in order to reduce the long-distance traveled, house rent, buying food from hotels and other associated expenses.”
