Plans by Kisii County to partner with schools in the region, where each pupil will be assigned to plant and nurture a tree each, is in its formative stage.

Speaking while celebrating World Tourism Day at Kisii Primary School on Wednesday, the County Director of Environment Kevin Kenani said that assigning each child a tree will foster a tree-planting culture among the children and the future society.

He further asked teachers at all levels to infuse environmental conservation themes in annual events such as drama and music festivals to further spread the message of afforestation and fighting climate change.

Kenani noted that the region is endowed with beautiful scenery with mountains, rivers and swamps that need to be taken care of and exploited wisely.

“We have a big responsibility to invest in our environment by conserving it to improve our economy,” he said.

The Director said that Keera Kia Nyakwana Falls, Manga Hills and Nyangweta Forest have the potential of attracting both local and international tourists to bring more income into the county.

He appealed to residents to replace trees that have been cut by planting two trees for each one that is felled.

The day-long celebration was crowned by planting more than 300 tree seedlings at the school.
