Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Vihiga branch Executive Secretary Sabala Inyeni has raised alarm over the discrimination of intern teachers regarding the recent salary raise in favour of teachers countrywide.

He said that it was unfair that the 1.5% Housing Levy was being deducted from the teachers’ salaries despite their monthly stipend remaining the same.

He said that before the implementation of the Finance Bill, they received a stipend of Ksh20,000 but due to the ever-increasing deductions, their take-home pay has reduced significantly to a paltry average of Ksh15,000.

Inyeni said that the interns’ pay should be reconsidered to at least Ksh25,000 to mitigate the impact of the new deductions as many of them are struggling to make ends meet considering the current high cost of living.

Speaking during an interview in Kilifi, Inyeni decried that a substantial number of teachers appear to be securing employment through their Members of Parliament (MPs) leaving those without access to their MPs at a disadvantage.

He implored the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to clarify the role of MPs in teacher employment, reminding the Commission of its independence and responsibility to ensure equity in the distribution of employment opportunities.

Inyeni further revealed that some of the newly employed teachers graduated later than their unemployed counterparts, creating a sense of hopelessness among the latter.
