A family and residents of Ogenga village in Homa Bay County are in shock after a 16-year-old Class 8 candidate allegedly committed suicide inside a church.

According to a report from Rachuonyo East Police Station, the schoolgirl’s body was discovered lifeless in the church, which is situated near her school.

In a statement seen by Education News, Kasewe Location acting Chief Dickson Samba said that the girl departed from home at around noon on Tuesday, September 12 only for her mother to find her lifeless body hours later.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain shrouded in mystery, prompting immediate investigations especially since the girl did not leave a note behind explaining the reason behind taking her life.

The girl’s body was removed to Okita Nursing Home in Rachuonyo awaiting postmortem as the family begins burial preparations.

This comes amid a surge in cases of suicide among youth in the country. There have been numerous campaigns on suicide sensitization and prevention. Currently, mental health awareness stakeholders are commemorating the National Suicide Prevention Week which kicked off on September 10, World Suicide Prevention Day, and will end on September 16, 2023.
