Bungoma allocates Ksh2.5M to purchase IT equipment for ECDE learners

Bungoma County Education Chief Officer Nicholas Kiboi

Bungoma County Chief Officer in charge of Education and Vocational Training Nicholas Kiboi has said that they have allocated Ksh2.5 million in the first supplementary budget to facilitate the purchase of Information Technology equipment to assist ECDE learners to acquire ICT skills.

“We want to go the ICT way by introducing laptops to assist learners undergoing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to ensure our pupils are at par with their colleagues in other schools,” he said.

Speaking at an education training forum in Bungoma town, Kiboi said that the initiative is timely to equip our children with digital knowledge to keep up with the global technological advancements.

Kiboi said that by October this year, the gadgets will have been supplied to the schools, noting that for now schools will have to share as they may not be enough.

“The resources including computers may be scarce but we will ensure that we fulfill our promise,” he said, adding that ECDE teachers will also be trained to be able to operate and maintain the gadgets.

The Officer revealed that Bungoma has a total of over 100,000 ECDE learners against 1,948 teachers who were employed in 2014.

“We have noticed that teachers are being overworked and we are set to employ more ECDE teachers,” he said.

He added that more ECDE centers are going to be constructed to supplement the current one center in each school and a school feeding programme will also be put in place.

Kiboi lauded the Bungoma County Children’s Rights Network (BCCRN) led by Chairperson David Lipao for being at the forefront fighting for children’s rights.

On his part, BCCRN representative John Mukenya lauded the county’s bold move to ensure quality ECDE education in in the county.
