Coast residents have been urged to change their negative attitude towards the implementation of school development projects in a bid to ensure their success and high education standards.
Speaking during a public meeting in Malindi town recently, Coast Aid Unity Mission Coordinator Mr. Baraks Baraka Mae asked school committees in the region to actively involve parents and residents in the implementation of school development projects to ensure their sustainability.
He further lamented that many school development projects in the region have failed simply because of lack of full involvement of parents and residents who are the beneficiaries of the projects under reference in schools.
However, Mr. Baraka decried the dismal performance in science subjects in national examinations in the region.
“Subjects like Mathematics and Sciences were mandatory, serious measures should therefore be taken by all education stakeholders to enable the students to perform well in these subjects,” he noted.
The Coordinator advised Coast residents to help provide the essential physical learning facilities in schools to uplift the standards of education in the region
At the same time he asked parents to stop blaming teachers for poor national examinations results in schools but instead visit schools to identify the problems affecting them and find solutions.
He also decried the high dropout rate among school children and more particularly school girls who drop out due to early pregnancies and marriages respectively.
The Coordinator said that urgent measures should be taken by all education stakeholders, Coast leaders and government officials to protect the future of girls in the Coastal region.
He further urged parents to offer equal education chances to their children regardless of their gender.
