Hundreds of teachers from North Eastern region have staged protests outside the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) offices in Nairobi demanding transfer due to rampant insecurity.

The teachers drawn from Mandera, Wajir and Garissa Counties remained steadfast in their quest stating that they were not returning to their duty stations which have been a target of Al-Shabaab.

The teachers lamented that they had asked TSC to facilitate their transfers to other safer regions but their employer has been ignoring their pleas despite having submitted transfer requests in anticipation of the new school term.

“We had been told to write to the commission for a response before school reopening, which we did but we have not heard from them,” a teacher from the group expressed.

This demonstration comes as primary and secondary schools commenced their third term of the 2023 academic year this week.

Reports from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) indicate that Mandera County alone currently needs more than 2,000 teachers to fill the gap in 300 public primary schools and another 550 public secondary schools.

Additionally, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki urged TSC to consider posting non-local teachers in the insecurity-stricken Northern counties for shorter durations and then reshuffling them a few weeks ago.
