Kisii Central Knut branch elects new Woman Rep

Yunuke Barongo Karori has been elected Kisii central branch Kenya Union of Teachers (Knut) Woman Representative, filling the space left by Caren Arori, who was appointed Education Chief Officer in the Kisii County government.

Barongo garnered 306 votes against her only competitor, Florence Abai Omwenga’s  175 during the  Annual General Meeting held at Elimu Academy in Kisii County.

Euniah Mogaka, Keumbu Branch Executive ( BEC) member was unopposed.

County Labor officer, Wilson Luvavo, who was the Presiding Officer termed the exercise, free, fair, and peaceful.

“The exercise was transparent and the candidates and the voters are satisfied with the election result,” Luvavo said during the exercise

Second National Knut Woman Representative Mercy Muthoni and area Branch Executive Secretary Albert Ondimu and James Arati a teacher for Special needs lauded the teachers for embracing peace during the election.

Barongo lauded the teachers for voting for her election, saying she will work hard to fight for their interests and ensure that the branch is strong.

“I thank you for having confidence in me. I pledge to step into the shoes of my predecessor and serve your union members selflessly” Barongo said.

Muthoni, who represented Knut Secretary General, Collins Oyuu urged the trade unionists to recruit more members to strengthen the union.

She lauded the government for employing more teachers and appealed for more to meet the needs of the growing number of learners in primary and junior secondary schools.

“47,000 teachers applied to be delocalized and only 17,000 have been transferred. I urge the Teachers Service Commission to effect the remaining transfers to make the teachers comfortable” Muthoni said.

Ondimu urged the county government to build more classes for Early Childhood Development Education ( ECDE) to cope with the increasing number of children.

He lauded the county government for supporting the teachers in conducting the AGM and urged leaders to support the ECDE teachers to motivate them.

Arati urged parents with Children abled differently to take them to special schools to enable them to exploit their potential, stressing that it was illegal to deny the children a right to education.

He implored the government to employ more teachers for special education to cope with the increasing numbers of children with special needs.

“I appeal to school Heads and Board of Management to ensure that school buildings and washrooms are friendly to children with special needs to make them comfortable,” Arati said.
