Around 140 Juakali artisans hailing from Kitale and its surrounding areas are undertaking a comprehensive Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment program.
The initiative which is taking place at the Kitale National Polytechnic aims at validating and certifying the skills of individuals working in the informal sector.
The RPL assessment is geared towards granting certifications to candidates who specialize in various fields within the Jua Kali sector.
The programme primarily focuses on levels four and five of electrical installation and Bee production.
Moreover, the program is also extending its offerings to provide a level 5 craft certificate for those who aspire to become office administrators.
Dr. Lucas Ongeri, the deputy principal in charge of academics said the programme will align candidates with qualifications and awards based on a polytechnic order issued in 2016.
“We are engaging with candidates through internship sessions, aligning them with a qualification and awarding program.”Dr. Ongeri stated.
Dr. Clare Muhuha, the deputy principal overseeing the administration, emphasized the vital role of the training in acknowledging untapped skills within communities.
“This initiative will enable individuals to secure certifications by providing a structured pathway for these skills, opening doors for meaningful contributions to communities,” Dr. Muhuha affirmed.
In collaboration with the institution, the Kenya Qualifications Authority will jointly issue certifications covering a multitude of disciplines within the informal sector.
“Our role is to recognize, support, and certify the skills that often go unrecognized,” Ms Jane Wekulo from the Authority explained.
Sharing insights on the program, Gertrude Khisa, chairperson of the Jua Kali Welfare Association said the training would be of great importance to their career.
“I am undertaking certification in textiles. I emphasize that this certification stands as a substantial endorsement, affording us a competitive edge and expanding our network for larger opportunities,” said Ms. Khisa.
The essence of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) lies in identifying, assessing, and certifying knowledge, skills, and attitudes, regardless of the learning context.
These facets, whether acquired formally or informally, hold significant value within both the formal and informal sectors.
The assessment and certification process align with learning outcomes and standards, contributing to partial or full qualifications.
Ultimately, the RPL process empowers individuals to attain formal qualifications that harmonize with their aptitude and expertise.
This achievement subsequently enhances employability, mobility, lifelong learning, social integration, and self-assurance among participants, heralding a new era of professional advancement and personal growth.
