Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) has established a framework to ensure a seamless transition of Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) learners to labour markets and industry.
Additionally, the Authority is currently developing a policy on National Curriculum Development that will address the inconsistencies in the curriculum development process and implementation in Kenya.
According to KNQA acting Director General, Dr. Alice Kande, the policy will be applied to effectively coordinate and harmonize the national curriculum development approach to produce quality skilled human resources required in the emerging trends in the industry.
Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) ensures the maintenance of standards, quality, and relevance at all levels of Kenya’s education and training sector.
Through its involvement with TVET and the industry, the Authority ensures that fake credentials do not infiltrate the labour market, ensuring that industries confidently recruit skilled professionals.
The collaboration between the industry and academia can create a lively and receptive framework for offering advisory on market-driven courses.
Industry experts can provide valuable guidance on curriculum design, ensuring that courses align with the current and future needs of the job market.
Kande said actively engaging with academic institutions, industry-sponsored internships, attachments and apprenticeships will offer students opportunities to apply classroom learning in real work settings, enhancing their employability and soft skills.
Collaborative efforts between industry and academia can as well lead to well-informed, validated and effective policy frameworks since the two are key stakeholders in informing the development of relevant policies on matters of qualifications.
The KNQA is ensuring standardization of qualifications and creating harmony within the training sector that will see to it that such inconsistencies in curriculum development and implementation in Kenya are addressed.
Also, resistance to change has posed a significant challenge to the authority since stakeholders may be reluctant to adopt new approaches, which can impede the progress of collaborative initiatives in the education and training sector.
