Six teachers record statement over merry-go-round pupil case

Six teachers at the Green Angels Academy in Githurai 44 area, Kiambu County, have recorded statements after a 7-year-old boy fell from a merry-go-round during a school trip to Destiny Gardens in Kiambu’s Ruiru area.

Caleb Odanga fell from the swing on August 8 and is still in a coma at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

According to doctors, the grade one pupil has no realistic chance of cure and no medical interventions will reverse the situation.

Despite the doctors’ appraisal on the condition of Caleb, the family is looking for an external expert to give way forward in his treatment’s diagnosis and medical cost.

“If there is any possibility of my son being attended to, which we have faith in that he will get treatment and be okay, we are asking for help. There is no way I’m going to sign the consent form so that they can remove the respirator that is helping with his breathing,” said Caleb’s father, Mwangi Odanga.

Detectives investigating the case have already visited the scene of the incident and interrogated the management and staff at Destiny Gardens on the safety of their equipment and support team to establish whether it was a case of negligence on either of the parties.

The management of Destiny Gardens, while sympathizing with the family, says the merry-go-round swing was in good shape and all the safety measures were followed to the latter.

“It was a very unfortunate incident but the machine has all the safety measures and the instructor was present and he ensured everything was okay,” John Njuguna, the Director, said.

As the probe into the incident continues, the family is seeking justice for their little boy.
