A good number of students from Ikonge PAG Girls Secondary School in Nyamira County who had been admitted to several hospitals across the county over suspected food poisoning have been discharged.
Only 12 learners out of the 138 who had been admitted are still at Ekerenyo Sub-County Hospital and another private facility within Ikonge Township.
A health team from Nyamira County Government led by Primary Healthcare Chief Officer Moenga Momanyi yesterday revealed that a number of the students had tested positive for amoeba.
The CO said this might have been occasioned by contaminated drinking water.
A team of stakeholders drawn from the ministries of Health and Education visited the school yesterday and downplayed the health scare, saying the situation was fully under control dismissing claims of food poisoning.
They made a number of recommendations after it emerged that the learners who were taken ill had consumed contaminated water.
Among the recommendations were fixing the faulty pump, enhancing sanitation of water storage and food handling equipment besides fresh certification of all the school food handlers.
The school administration Principal Jecinta Omondi confirmed that the water pump had developed problems before they resorted to using an alternative source.
“We have made an effort to get in touch with the parents of all affected learners to assure them of their children’s safety.” She said
