list Kericho schools as hardship stations, KNUT ask TSC

KNUT Kericho hardship TSC SCHOOLS

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kericho branch has asked Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to gazette several mother schools in the area as Hardship stations.

Speaking during an AGM held at Kebeneti Secondary School, the branch Chairman David Rono said that there are hardship mother schools that have not been listed as hardships stations.

“This is a matter that calls for urgent action,” he added.

In 2013, KNUT Kipkelion branch appealed for sections of Kipkelion and Londiani sub-counties to be gazetted as hardship areas and for teachers paid hardship allowances.

The branch Secretary David Bore said that the terrain of the two sub-counties had made the working conditions of teachers unbearable with others opting to be transferred to other places.

Some schools found in Ainamoi, Kapsaos, Kaplekartet and Sigowet which started earning hardship allowance in 1997 had the pay stopped by TSC in 2011.

The schools whose hardship was withdrawn from the list include; Buchenge, Mureret, Tabain, Chepkoiyo, Poiwek, Poiywek Secondary, Ketipyese Primary, Koitaimat, Kaburet, Laliat and Kamelilo.

Schools situated in hardship areas but did not benefit with the allowance included; Tumoiyot, Kapndege, Emtit, Kimasat, Kapilieli, and Kaplelartet.

At that time, secondary schools with the allowances within the hardship areas are Kaplelartet, Kipsamoi, and Sondu.

During the meeting a number of teachers decried unprofessionalism from a TSC officer in Soin Sigowet sub-county who has been notorious for demanding bribes and sexual favours from female teachers before approving transfers for teachers.

The teachers protested and called for immediate disciplinary action against the said officer.

Area MP Justice Kemei said he was concerned over the allegations and called for urgent TSC intervention.

“I am sorry for the teachers who have undergone this misery and call upon the TSC to urgently launch a probe on the allegations and take appropriate action,” he said.

Also in attendance was CAS Nominee for Tourism Wilson Sossion, KNUT branch Secretary Ann Cheruiyot and KNUT National Treasurer Kennedy Nyamwanda.
