JKUAT students shine in Mozilla Africa innovation challenge

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) students have emerged among the top prize winners in the just concluded Mozilla Africa Innovation Challenge.

The students, Daisy Bochaberi Momanyi (Telecommunication and Information Engineering) and her team comprising of Sera Wanjiku Maina (a recent Electrical and Electronics Engineering graduate from JKUAT), Hope Kagame (Computer Science student at Nairobi University) and June Linda Adhiambo (Biomedical Engineering student at Kenyatta University) won the prestigious Mozilla Innovation Challenge top prize with their innovation, Classify Me.

The team presented the ground breaking project, Classify Me, at the Nairobi Arboretum on June 26 and 27. The project aims to revolutionize the way high school students receive personalized course recommendations.

Classify Me, a unique course recommendation system, utilizes advanced algorithms and data analysis techniques to match high school students with suitable future careers.

The winning team was awarded Ksh500,000 from the one million prize money allocated to the student category.

Daisy revealed that she he had an opportunity to attend panel discussions that covered various topics in the tech industry. It was during these sessions that she delved into the crucial realm of data security and policies. Recognizing the significance of this often-overlooked area, Daisy gained valuable knowledge that would be instrumental in ensuring the success of Classify Me.

Classify Me was more than just a project for our team. It is contribution to the world where education and career paths intersected harmoniously,” said Daisy.

School of Computing and Information Technology Director Dr. Michael Kimwele congratulated the students, saying they exceeded expectations and exhibited remarkable ingenuity, determination and collaboration.

“It is my honor to commend each and every one of them for their unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and creating solutions that address real-life problems,” said Dr. Kimwele.
