Construction authority accredits 300 artisans at Manyatta TVC

300 artisans in Manyatta constituency in Embu county have been accredited by the National Construction Authority (NCA) after undergoing a training in collaboration with Manyatta National Constituency Development Fund.

The training was triggered by the fact that many artisans (Fundis) were practicing without certification with knowledge on safety in the building and construction industry as well as ensuring proper documentation during their practice.

While addressing the press at Manyatta Technical and Vocational College (TVC), area Member of Parliament (MP) Gitonga Mukunji said that the accreditation will bring sanity and trust in the construction industry as artisans will be producing their certificates to work on clients’ projects.

“The reason why we have collaborated with NCA to train the masons, carpenters, plumbers and electricians  is to ensure they are competent,” he said.

Mukunji said the accreditation will also increase chances of tapping opportunities like the affordable housing project.

“As we are talking of the housing projects and with the passage of the housing development levy, it is prudent that we prepare our people on the ground to take the upcoming opportunities,” he said.

He further said that he will put up an association for all artisans in the constituency for easy access by clients.

The first term legislator also said that he will as well hire accredited artisans in his CDF projects from a kitty worth Ksh60 million.

NCA Research and Business Development Acting Manager Eng. Stephen Nyakondo said the rise of cases of collapsing buildings was a result of artisans that were given jobs but were not adequately trained.

“As an authority we have moved very fast to improve the quality of the industry and such a programme is very important to bring on board qualified, tried and tested personnel,” he said.

The TVC Principal David Nthuci lauded the move and urged the youth to enroll in the institution to acquire and boost their technical skills.
