Govt, NGO partner to provide clean water to primary schools in Western

The Water Project, a Non-Governmental Organization, in partnership with a local organization Friends of Timothy and the Water Resource Authority (WRA) are targeting to establish water projects in different primary schools in the Western region to deal with water challenges in the area.

The Ksh1 million project is aimed at solving the challenge by drilling boreholes in the schools to address water scarcity for them and the community around the institutions.

The project will also see primary schools getting 6-door wash rooms and 3 handwash stations.

Among the first beneficiaries in Kakamega County were St. Paul’s Lubinu and Ebubere Primary Schools in Mumias East.

Speaking to Education News, the Western Regional Commissioner Irungu Macharia acknowledged the project sponsors calling upon other sponsors to chip in and help in wiping out the shortage.

“I want to appreciate the partnership for drilling boreholes in our schools to curb water scarcity in the region as I call upon other like-minded well-wishers to come on board and support the project in any way they can,” he appealed.

Macharia further said that the availability of water in the schools will retain learners in school and continue their education instead of going out of school in search of water.

The administrator said that primary schools are targeted because they are not entitled to extra levies other than capitation fund from the national government.

He noted that what determines the drilling of a bore hole in a school is the availability of ground water in the school.
