Women group launches campaign against early pregnancies, drug abuse among students

Women for Women Kangundo Community Based Organization (CBO) in Machakos county has launched a sensitization campaign to tackle rampant cases of early pregnancies and drug abuse among students in the county.

The move follows alarming reports of increased cases of the vices in the county.

Speaking after launching the campaign at Matuu Estate Primary School in Matungulu sub-county on Monday, the CBO Chairperson Victoria Mulalya said that the group will also reach out to children in other sub-counties to sensitize them against premarital sex and drugs.

The boys and girls at the school in Matuu were trained on enhancing their confidence, importance of education and how to navigate adolescence.

“My aim is to strengthen campaigns against teenage pregnancy and drugs by addressing it’s causes through working with data collection and information systems to identify children at risk, track policies and strategies aimed at pregnancy prevention among schoolgirls,” she said.

Mulalya appealed to area leaders to provide funds in order to assist learners from poor families and orphaned girls; and parents to educate and guide their children to wade through their teenage years.

“If these boys and girls are offered education opportunities, we can pull them out of early pregnancies and drugs,” she added.
