Sakaja unveils Ksh1.2B lunch programme to feed learners in Nairobi

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has unveiled a Ksh1.2 billion food subsidy programme set to benefit 250,000 learners in the county.

Speaking during the launch of the programme dubbed ‘Dishi na County’ on Monday, Sakaja said that the construction of central innovative kitchens within the county’s schools is aimed at ensuring children do not go without food in public schools and ECDE centres.

He indicated that construction of the kitchens will commence tomorrow in Dagoretti North, Embakasi Central, Embakasi South, Kasarani, Kibra, Makadara, Starehe, Roysambu, Ruaraka, and Westlands sub-counties.

“Nutritious meals will be cooked in these central kitchens and the meals transported in special sealed containers and special vehicles to keep the meals safe from contamination and keep them warm, to surrounding schools. Each kitchen is expected to produce about 10,000 nutritional meals daily which will be distributed across each ward,” he said.

He added that parents will be required to pay Ksh5 daily for each learner and the county will cater for the rest. For learners whose parents will be unable to afford, Sakaja said the county will work with the private sector, individuals and corporates to fund them.

Construction of the central kitchens in sub-counties will be done in the following sites; Starehe – Racecourse Primary, Makadara – Bidii Primary, Kasarani – Njiru Primary, Roysambu – Roysambu Primary and Embakasi Central – Kayole One Primary.

In Dagoretti North, the kitchen will be based at Muthangari Primary, Kibra – Toi Primary, Westlands – Farasi Lane Primary, Ruaraka – Baba Dogo Primary and Embakasi South – Kwa Njenga Primary.
