UoN, Nyandarua Govt to establish county’s first university

The University of Nairobi (UoN) in collaboration with the Nyandarua County Government will set up the first university in the county – ‘Nyandarua University College’.

The decision was reached during a courtesy call to the UoN Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Kiama by a delegation from county led by Governor Moses Kiarie on June 2 and the plans to realize the project are in top gear.

According to the county leadership, the idea of establishing a university has been held by the local community for a long time and they are sure that they will be offered quality education under the mentorship of UoN.

Professor Kiama commended the county government for choosing the varsity as a key pillar to achieve this great milestone.

“As the best university in Kenya and the region, the university has welcomed the request and will be willing to guide the county,” he said.

A working committee has already been established which comprises professionals from both the university and the Nyandarua University College team.

The VC advised the delegation to write and send a formal request following the required guidelines to his office for the commencement of the process.

As the major stakeholder, the county government will identify and provide land and other support for the establishment of the university college and its campuses.

The UoN team will be tasked to guide and advise the college team on Commission of University Education (CUE) guidelines and requirements of establishing a university college and matters of curriculum development.

The county is the only one without such an institution in the Mount Kenya Region.
