The family of Michael Kibet, a Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) ICT graduate, is still in shock after he took his own life yesterday in Nandi County after failing to secure a job two years after his graduation.

The deceased graduated with First Class honors in 2021 having also scored grade A plain from Meteitei Boys High School in Tinderet.

Lelwak Chief David Rugut confirmed the incident and added that the 26-year old man hung himself outside his brother’s house in the area in Lessos where he had gone to visit him out of frustration.

“We are really saddened by the loss of Michael. He was a hardworking and disciplined boy in our location. He ended his life out of frustration according to his brother,” Rugut said.

Michael did not leave any suicide note behind.

The villagers who were taken aback by the event claimed that Kibet came from a very humble background and upon his demise he was living with his widowed mother who is a retired nurse.

He indulged himself in the sale of tomatoes along the Nandi-Chemilil road.

His body was removed to Samaritan Funeral Home in Kapsabet as funeral preparations kick off. He will be laid to rest on Friday, June 9, 2023.

Suicide cases have been alarmingly increasing in the country with experts attributing the trend to mounting stress and depression.

The Kenyan National Commission of Human Rights (KNCHR) estimates that 25 per cent and 40 per cent of outpatients and inpatients suffer from mental health conditions.

The most frequent diagnoses of mental illness made in general hospital settings are depression, substance abuse, stress and anxiety disorders.
