Senate rejects TSC request to hire teachers on permanent terms

TSC SALARY

The Senate National Cohesion Committee has opposed the proposal tabled by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to hire 111, 870 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.

The committee asked TSC boss Dr Nancy Macharia to instead employ the teachers on contractual terms.

It argued that the government lacks the capacity to recruit more teachers on permanent terms, further urging the commission to identify legal issues to be addressed to allow teachers be employed on contracts so that the commission can deal with its limited budgetary allocation

Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago said Ksh14 bilion is a lot of money and that the commission can’t get it in one go.

Tharaka Nithi Senator Mwenda Gataya said the commission can employ intern teachers and thereafter consider them for pensionable and permanent terms.

In her presentation to the committee on Tuesday, Dr Macharia requested for an annual budgetary allocation of Ks14.8 billion to enable it address teacher shortage in the country.

She revealed that despite efforts by the commission to recruit 30,000 teachers earlier this year, an additional 47, 329 teachers and 64, 541 teachers are needed at the primary and secondary level respectively.
