Boresha Education Empowerment, a Non-Government Organization (NGO), has partnered with the Ministry of Education, the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Traffic Police to train school bus drivers on road safety and life saving skills.
The NGO’s Nyanza Coordinator Vincent Atong said the noble move is aimed at addressing and reducing the number of accidents witnessed in Nyanza region in the recent past.
He added that the two day capacity building training is focused on Traffic Act, Nation Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) Act, Emergency Evaluation, First Aid, Guidance and Counseling, Firefighting, detection skills and communication.
“We want to enforce safety measures and child-friendly policies in schools,” he said, adding that the guidance and counseling sessions are important since some accidents are caused by mental health issues.
The National Coordinator Raymond Juma termed the training a preventive measure for the drivers who hold the future of children.
“If we don’t prevent such accidents, we are killing the future of our children,” he said.
He added that the learners are also being taught how to abide by traffic rules.
Juma noted that the training will also help to improve the working relationship between the drivers and security officers.
The drivers complained of harassment from the police, citing instances where they have been stopped on the road and their licenses taken yet they haven’t committed any offense.
Similar trainings are planned to take place in other counties within the region in the coming weeks.
