Capitation funds for secondary schools have been released, Machogu says

The government has started channeling capitation funds to secondary schools to enhance smooth learning and operations, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has revealed.

This comes after intense lobbying by teacher unions and education stakeholders who said that the delay had brought school operations to a standstill.

Speaking at Mobamba Mixed Secondary school in Kisii county during a funds drive for the construction a girls dormitory, the CS also noted that the government has planned to employ more teachers to mitigate shortages across the country when the economy stabilizes.

Machogu lauded stakeholders for supporting the school to perform well in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination and urged the current candidates to perform even better.

Principal Dr. George Ogoch said the school presented 348 candidates in the examination where they all attained direct university entry with the school scoring a mean of 9.28.

He noted that the school attracted more students this year and with its current 37 teachers, it requires more to cope with the swelling enrolment.

“We spend Ksh1 million to pay our 30 teachers employed by the Board of Management (BoM) every month. I urge the government to employ them and retain them at the school,” he said.

Nyaribari Masaba constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Daniel Manduku said he has given education a priority and pledged to continue improving infrastructure in schools to foster education standards.

He challenged parents and guardians to ensure their children go to schools, emphasizing that he will fight to ensure learners who attain quality grades join higher institutions of learning.

Manduku deplored stagnation of teachers in one grade, saying he has tabled a Bill in Parliament to amend the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Act to reverse the trend.

Also in attendance were; County Director of Education Philip Chirchir, Foreign Affairs Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Joash Maangi and other principals from the area.
