KNUT urges teachers to closely monitor students in schools

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) National Deputy Secretary General (DSG) Hesbon Otieno has made a clarion call to school heads and leaders to keenly monitor the students’ register to ascertain the whereabouts of all students registered in their schools.

In an interview with Education News, Otieno stated that following the recent shocking revelations that unfolded at Shakahola where people including school-going children lost lives, it was high time school heads take keen interest in monitoring learners in and after school.

A number of students who found themselves in Pastor Makenzi’s Good News International Church at Shakahola were not going to school since the religion was against learning and education.

“The government insists that all children should be in school. When a student is registered in a school, leaders in the school should follow up during the day to ensure all students are accounted for,” said Otieno.

While monitoring the registers and a student is missing, teachers should inform the local leadership including the village elders and Chiefs for action to be taken to ensure the children’s safety.

At the same time, Otieno has urged religious teachers in schools to educate and inform learners and students on the emergence of perverted religions so they are aware.

“To curb this, it is important for the local authority and teachers to work together so that all children are accounted for on a daily basis,” he added.
