Report: UoN at position 1,425 in global universities ranking

The University of Nairobi (UoN) emerged the only Kenyan university in the global top 2,000 universities in the latest rankings released yesterday by the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR).

The varsity was ranked position 1425, placing it in the top 7 per cent worldwide, although the position was a drop from last year’s ranking by 20 places due to a decrease in the employability of its graduates and its research output.

CWUR uses four factors in ranking universities: quality of education, employability, quality of faculty and research performance.

UoN Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama was delighted to hear the news and stated that they had a huge responsibility to maintain the standards they’ve set.

“It is alarming to see only one Kenyan University in the rankings,” he said.

The total number of universities from around the world that were ranked by CWUR this year was 20,531.

The top 10 is dominated by universities from the US, Harvard being the world’s top university followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University of Cambridge and Oxford (UK), Princeton, Chicago, Columbia, Pennsylvania and Yale.

In Africa, the top ten universities are Cape Town, Witwatersrand, Stellenbosch, KwaZulu-Natal, Cairo, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Ain Shams, Addis Ababa and North-West.

The top ten universities in Europe this year are: Cambridge, Oxford, University College of London, PSL, Imperial College, ETH Zurich, Paris Saclay, Copenhagen, Karolinska Institute and Paris City University.

China has 314 institutions on the list where 96 per cent of these universities were ranked higher than last year.
