Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli has vowed to oppose and lead his colleagues against the Finance Bill 2023 which will subject all civil servants including teachers to a 3 per cent salary cut to finance the national housing scheme by the government.

“We cannot allow our teachers to be deducted the proposed 3 per cent levy. As leaders we will stand with teachers to oppose the move to deduct their salaries,” said Wakoli.

His sentiments were echoed by Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa who added that despite its adoption, he is still against the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC); and Webuye East MP Martin Wanyonyi who also pledged to raise education standards in his area by first donating exercise books to every school in the constituency.

Speaking during the Webuye East Education Day at St. Cecilia Girls High school Misikhu where the county leaders met to chart the future of education, Wanyonyi said that he will support every top ten KCPE student in each primary school to join Form one.

Also in attendance was Kanduyi MP John Makali, Bungoma county Woman MP Catherine Wambilianga, heads of schools, students and residents.

Elsewhere, KUPPET Bungoma Executive Secretary Augustine Luketelo has urged the government to fasttrack the allocation of capitation funds and increase the allocation of NG-CDF funds so that more students benefit from bursaries.

“Schools are going through a lot of difficulties. So far the government has not disbursed the term two free secondary education funds and yet we have a lot of activities going on including music and sports,” he said.

Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) area Chairperson Aggrey Ligami and his Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) counterpart Patrick Musinai appealed to the area CDF office to assist schools by providing and developing infrastructure.
