Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) National Chairman Kahi Indimuli has urged the government to employ an additional 60,000 teachers to handle Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) students.

The national chair expressed concern that teacher shortage will greatly upset the government’s agenda of effectively producing full-fledged students transiting to Senior Secondary Schools.

Indimuli decried the few teacher placements saying it has sabotaged the new curriculum and called for urgent interventions including employing more teachers.

He noted that the government can employ graduates from different areas like arts to help the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) thrive.

He asked the government to build infrastructure in all schools and purchase sufficient textbooks for learners.

Usawa Agenda Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel Manyasa blamed the government for its misplaced priorities, arguing that the Hustler Fund kitty has been allocated Ksh40 billion at the expense of the education sector.

He said the government should be serious in providing a clear roadmap on JSS to allow the curriculum thrive.

Dr. Manyasa noted that the government has failed to educate the public on the new curriculum.

He urged unions to be at the forefront in advocating matters geared to support the ailing education sector.

Education Expert Kennedy Echesa expressed concern that the government employed teachers but hasn’t paid them.

He urged the government to stop frustrating the underpaid and heavily taxed JSS teachers and instead support them to enable them propel the new curriculum.
