For Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) principals to be effective in their roles and achieve their personal and institutional goals and objectives, it is paramount for the institution managers to always embrace a positive attitude and cultivate the same culture in their work environment, Dr. Beatrice Kathungu, a lecturer in the department of psychology in Kenyatta University has said.
Speaking during a capacity-building workshop in Mombasa by the Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) recently, she said people’s perception was hardly a replica of reality and that people constantly created and recreated their own worlds, viewing it through their own different lenses.
“Our attitude is determined by aspects such as our mindset, how we feel in a particular day, what we constantly think and how we have trained our minds to constantly think, and our everyday behaviors,” explained the lecturer.

Dr. Kathungu encouraged the TVET heads to be more accommodating and understanding with those around them adding that their world perceptions were different and shaped by various factors such as family and friends, where they live, their culture, religious background and past experiences.
As leaders of institutions and people, she stated that it was crucial for them to constantly have positive attitude towards their work because it had a significant impact on their lives and how they discharged their functions and also shaped their success and happiness in their institutions.
“Your attitude is not something that happens to you. You choose your attitude. It is created by your thoughts and you choose your thoughts. You are the architect of your frame of mind and you decide how you perceive and process the events of life and the world,” she stated.
Dr. Kathungu noted that a positive attitude acknowledges problems and focuses on finding solutions and opportunities.
The workshop themed, ‘Building leadership capacity in TVET institutions for accelerated youth empowerment’ saw over three hundred TVET principals come together to share ideas and exchange experiences.
