Kenya Power sponsors trainings on electrical safety to reduce accidents in schools

Kenya Power is set to train a total of 1,658 head teachers and Teacher Safety Champions (TSCs) in 15 counties in the country on electrical safety education in primary schools between March and June 2023 in order to protect the children from electrical accidents.

The counties selected have had high incidents of accidents involving electricity during user-gadget interface.

The Safety Education Sensitization Workshops, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MoE), will include 829 selected head teachers and an equal number of TSCs, County Directors of Education (CDEs), County Quality Assurance and Standards officers, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) County Directors, all Sub-county Directors of Education (SCDEs), and all TSC Sub-county Directors in the 15 counties.

In a circular signed by the Principal Secretary (PS) in the State Department for Basic Education Dr. Belio Kipsang dated March 13, 2023, the training will be conducted in Bungoma, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Kisii, Kisumu, Meru, Migori, Mombasa, Nakuru, Narok, Siaya, Trans Nzoia and Nairobi counties.

“In order to protect the children from electrical accidents, the MoE in collaboration with Kenya Power is implementing a programme on electrical safety education in primary schools,” said Dr. Kipsang in the circular.

The company will foot all the related venue costs. The programme is meant to help entrench an electrical safety culture in schools, impart knowledge on safe use of electricity, help reduce fires in schools and related costs, prevent fatalities and other potential injuries resulting from contact with electricity, and enhance smooth running of education programmes in schools.

The CDEs in the 15 counties have been tasked by the ministry to help the Kenya Power regional managers to secure the proposed venues where the sensitization workshops will be conducted, with Central Rift regions of Nakuru and Narok counties having already conducted their training in March 2023.
