First cohort of engineers graduate from Machakos University

Machakos University on Friday awarded its first Cohort of Engineering students with degrees during the institution’s 7th graduation ceremony following full recognition from the licencing authority.

Initially, the University which was a constituent campus of Kenyatta University had been running the Engineering programme under the mother institution.

During the congregation presided by the University Chancellor, Dr. James Mworia and attended by Machakos County Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi and Ministry of Education officials, a total 2,261 graduands were conferred with degrees in various fields.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu through a speech read by a representative called on the University to take up the challenge of equipping the next generation with neccesary skills to make them tech savvy.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to install 100,000 kilometers of digital highway in form of fibre optic cables to enable internet access in every part of the country.

The initiative is expected to serve 29,000 schools,26,000 markets and 8.5 million homes with access to electricity which is a key component of digital connectivity.

“The digital revolution will change how Kenyans access government services,browse the internet and secure employment and access to education from the digital space,” said Mr Machogu in the speech.

The Machakos Deputy governor Mr Mwangangi who represented governor Wavinya Ndeti praised the university administration for steering the institution to be a center of research and innovation.

He urged the graduands to be innovative in order to contribute meaningfuly to the well-being of society.

Mwangangi advised the graduands to uphold integrity as they stepped out of University into the job market which was becoming increasingly competitive.
