County to spend Ksh60million on free milk programme for ECDE

Free Milk Programme

County Government of Uasin Gishu will spend Ksh 60 million on free milk programme for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) children.

According to the CEC Education, Janet Kosgey, the programme will benefit 40,000 learners from 654 ECD centres.

“Governor Jonathan Bii’s administration will spend Ksh 60 Million for free Milk Programme where 40,000 ECDE learners will benefit. This is to ensure that students who come from poor background also get food just like others,” said Kosgey.

She reiterated that they are waiting for the procurement and branding process to be done  before the targeted learners start receiving free milk at their respective ECD centres

“The noble initiative will go a long way in keeping the children in school as well as uplifting the standards of education in the region. We are yet to come up with a programme on how the learners will be receiving free milk either twice or once a week,” she added.

Kosgey said the programme is aimed at providing nutritional value especially to learners who come from poor family backgrounds in far flung rural areas.

“With the introduction of a free milk programme in our ECDE centre we are looking forward to attracting and retaining more learners and reducing cases of absenteeism and desertion of classes among the children,” said Kosgey.

The CEC Education said   the devolved unit has allocated enough money towards the purchase of teaching and learning materials in all its ECDE centres to ensure quality education is offered to the children.

“Part of the money was used towards purchase of text books and stationery that include pencils, dustless chalks, plasticine and erasers. We are committed towards elevating levels of academic standards with special emphasis on having a functional ECDE programme in primary school,” she added.
