Governor blames MCAs for delay in bursaries

Bursaries

Machakos Governor, Wavinya Ndeti, has announced that the county bursaries worth Ksh 80 million will be disbursed immediately the Education Committee sorts out hitches at the County Assembly.

Speaking in Machakos on, Friday Wavinya blamed the Educational Committee in the County Assembly for the delays.

Wavinya disclosed that the monies were released to the account but the committee refused to submit the list of applicants to be awarded with bursaries.

She accused them of trying to alter the list and introduce new beneficiaries.

“I have directed immediate disbursement of Ksh 80 million worth of county education bursaries. I am disappointed that despite having released the cash into the bank account two months ago, the County Assembly Committee on Education has caused the unnecessary delay by not approving the list of beneficiaries and has even attempted to alter the list by introducing new beneficiaries,” she said.

“This is unfair to our children and I have decided that the disbursement will proceed as scheduled without further delay,” added the governor.

She spoke while issuing bursary cheques worth Ksh 785,000 to needy students.

She disclosed that the funds were from sponsors who have partnered with the county government.

Our calls to Kyeleni ward member of county assembly Grace Bahati who is the Chairperson of the Education and Social Services Committee to respond on the issue went unanswered.
