Kabianga University hostels razed down by fire

Kabianga University

The police are investigating the cause of fire that razed down Hostel 6 and 7 of Kericho – based Kabianga University which reportedly accommodates first year students and a handful of continuing students yesterday night.

The fire is reported to have destroyed properties of unknown value before it was put off by the fire fighters from Kericho County and James Finlays Tea Company.

The sorry incident took place the same day the institution was opened after it was temporarily closed two weeks ago after the students took to the streets to riot over the delayed disbursement of Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans and a planned fee hike by the government.

So far, no student or staff member was injured during the fire.

At the same time, the Kenya University Students Organisations (KUSO) leader, Anthony Manyara, has called for immediate reinstatement of the institution student leader and other 50 leaders who were suspended in connection to the demos in bid to ease tension and return normalcy at the learning institution.
