New batch of Uasin Gishu youth flagged off to Finland amidst controversy

Finland flagged

Uasin Gishu Education County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Dr. Janet Kosgei has flagged off another batch of students to Finland for further studies.

She said the group are part of the programme that the county has been running to help the youth pursue their studies abroad.

Speaking during the dispatch, Dr. Kosgei said the county is currently working on streamlining the programme so as to address issues that had almost disrupted it.

The programme has been on the national spotlight ever since some students already studying in Finland were threatened with deportation for failure to pay their fees.

The misunderstanding prompted Governor Jonathan Bii to set up a taskforce headed by Deputy Governor Eng. John Barorot to look into why the purported sponsorship was not honoured.

“We thank the governor for establishing the taskforce to salvage the programme after issues arose that almost tore it apart,” the CECM said, adding: “the 31 students have been allowed to travel to Finland to study physiotherapy after paying 70 per cent of their tuition fees. They had already secured study visas,” she added.

She further noted that more students are on their way to Finland.

The CECM further noted that the programme has been successful so far and expressed optimism that parents will soon start enjoying the fruits of their indulgence.

“In the next 5 years, the county dependence ratio will go down, and harambees will be few,” said Dr. Kosgei.

Her Chief Officer (CO) Ruth Samoei on her part advised the students to work hard and maintain their identity even when abroad, imploring them to have independent minds.

“Go and realize your personal goals and targets – you’re never ‘we’, but ‘I’,” she said.
