Machogu promises to fire, prosecute teachers punishing students brutally

Machogu

Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, has called for the arrest of the teachers who have in the spun of two weeks severely brutalized students in Nyamira and Kisii Counties.

Machogu said this as the police reported that they had arrested three of the teachers involved in the latest incident as he warned that those involved would be fired and be prosecuted for going too far while administering corporal punishment which is illegal in Kenyan law.

In the latest event, a 19-year –old student in Nyabisia Secondary School was beaten badly by five teachers and a security guard after it was alleged that he was cheating in the end of term exams, an attack which saw him lose one of his testicles.

According to the medics of Hema Hospital in Kisii, the boy`s scrotum was swollen and the testicles had ruptured as a result of severe beating and they had to perform an emergency surgery to remove it.

“This is so disturbing and criminal! It is no longer an educational matter, it is a criminal matter, if a teacher goes to that extent, then he is a criminal and he is no longer a teacher,” Machogu said.

He also added that the Ministry of Education would not tolerate extra legal actions by errant teachers that undermine the ministry`s Code of Conduct and Guidelines.
