Learning institutions have been asked to embrace the use of clean energy in a bid to reduce deforestation as a way of conserving the environment.

Speaking while presiding over a clean energy initiative at Moi Tambach Primary School, Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Prof Grace Cheserek said the time has come for institutions to change the source of fuel to save already depleted forest cover in the country.

Prof Cheserek said thousands of acres of trees are felled yearly for wood used in boarding schools as the sole source of energy adding that the trend jeopardizes ecosystems in the area that has seen increased destruction of forests.

She applauded the school for embracing the initiative saying it could greatly conserve the environment. She called on other institution to follow suit.

“Thousands of acres of trees are felled every year for firewood. This has contributed much to the degradation of the environment. We want to urge other schools to reverse the trend and emulate this institution,” she remarked.

The school partnered with the Equity Bank to implement a liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) project for the school’s dining hall.

Equity bank’s General Manager Stanley Nganga said the project will see the institution reduce the cost of energy production as well as increasing efficiency.

He said the bank has supplied more LPG tankers to secondary schools in the county saying the initiative has gained traction that will see saving of the environment and guarantee the safety and health of the workers as opposed to exposure of smoke emitted by firewood.
