Absenteeism major hurdle against education development in Mombasa, Director says

Frequent absenteeism among students in Mombasa County has been identified as the major stumbling block towards education advancement.

Speaking to Education News in his office in Mombasa town recently, the County Director of Education  Mr. Peter Magiri told parents in the region to ensure their children enroll and attend school every day during the stipulated periods.

He noted that absenteeism greatly affected the region’s performance in national examinations.

The Director revealed that the county targets a mean score of 4.00 in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations and strategic plans had already been put in place achieve the same.

“Ministry of Education officials in the county have already met public secondary school principals right from county, sub county and zonal levels to discuss ways to improve the 2023 KCSE,” he said.

Mr. Magiri lauded teachers for the stellar performance in 2022 KCSE and advised them to strategize on was to post better results in this year’s examinations.

However, he decried the low number of parents who attend school meetings to monitor their children’s progress.
