MP welcomes reinstatement of varsity VC

By John Majau

Tigania West MP has welcomed the reinstatement of Meru University Vice Chancellor Romanus Odhiambo.

John Mutunga hailed the VC for the many developments he spearheaded in the institution including growing the student population from 4,000 to 11,000 and urged education stakeholders to provide him a conducive environment to assist him continue growing the university.

He was speaking after the reinstatement of the VC after he was ousted by the then Council over alleged incompetence on February 27.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu later reinstated the VC and appointed a new Council that took effect on March 10.

Dr. Jane Kiringai was appointed as the Council chairperson to replace Bosire Mwebi who had overseen the suspension of VC Romanus Odhiambo.

The new council also replaced Muriira M’Mbwiria, Stephen Kimani, Dick Waswa, Pauline Jeruto, Naomi Kipuri, Paul Mungai, and Damaris Nyasuguta (Treasury).

Before their dismissal, Machogu directed the Bosire Mwebi-led council to reinstate Romanus, saying his suspension was ill-motivated.

“We want men and women who know their job is to run institutions. I have appointed a new council of very able women and men who will chart a new strategic direction for this great university which will be chaired by Dr Jane Kiringai,” said Mr. Machogu.

He said that Romanus was serving well and there was no urgency in sending him home since his term was to expire in August.

He exuded his confidence that the combination of efforts with the other actors and with the guidance of the chancellor of the university, the board will be able to take the institution to another level.

“This new gender-balanced team brings together a rich mix of skills and experience that will provide visionary leadership to steer the university to greater heights,” said Mr Machogu.
