Union lauds government for restoring security, calls for more efforts

A union official has extolled government efforts for deploying military in areas affected by insecurity and perceived as dangerous and disturbed, saying they should tighten measures to ensure stability.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Branch Executive Secretary Mr. Paul Biwott said the move by the president William Ruto would curb rising cases of uncertainty, which has continued to reign supreme in the region.

He noted that scores of people including school going children have lost their lives recently due to banditry, stressing urgent measures to be taken by government to restore calm.

Mr. Biwott said learning in porous borders of Elgeiyo Marakwet and Baringo has been paralyzed and called upon the authorities to speed up efforts to embrace peace in the area.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with Education News in Iten town Mr. Biwott begged teachers to introduce themselves to security apparatus conducting operation to avoid clash with them in areas affected by insecurity.

He said government should disarm suspected Pokot bandits if they were serious in their operation.

Mr. Biwott decried the recent attack at Tunyo in Elgeiyo Marakwet even with the heavy deployment of military along the borders of six counties in the North.

‘’ It is disheartening to report banditry at this era of 21 st century and unacceptable to see promising youth and women been killed and deprived of their wealth .The government should swing into action by dealing with the menace once and for all and consider it a terrorist activity, ‘’ Mr. Biwott aforementioned.

He however advised the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to heed the call of promoting teachers in different job groups since parliamentary committee had included funding in 2023/2024 budgets.

The unionist requested the employing teachers body to abolish some job groups applied and switch to old job groups for it takes up to 40 years for teachers to be promoted to a position of a head teacher.
