Parents demonstrate, demand removal of school principal

By Enock Okong’o

The parents of Kiendege Primary School in Nyamira County took to the streets on Wednesday afternoon to demand the transfer of the school head teacher.

Led by Jared Obong’o and Richard Nyangoya, the parents stormed the school and locked the head teacher out of his office.

The irate parents who carried leaves, twigs, whistles and drums accused the head teacher Mr. Nelson Abonyo of gross misappropriation of public funds.

They alleged that the head teacher sold tea leaves and trees belonging to the school but used the proceeds for his personal entertainment.

Other allegations they labeled on the teacher include dragging their reputation in the mud and that he has extended the same abuse to their children.

“The parents wondered how a teacher could extend village gossips from parents to their children and expect them to perform well in the national examinations. We want the Ministry of Education to transfer him from here because he has become a liability to the community,” said Jared Abongo.

When this reporter contacted the alleged head teacher on phone for a comment, he only responded tersely with bitterness.

“Let those who accused me tell you all the details,” he said.

Nyamira County Director of Education, Mr. Boniface Ouko, condemned the parents for taking the law into their hands as they locked the head teacher out of his office.

He asked them to employ dialogue if they felt offended by the teacher.

“The school is a government institution that should be respected by parents who are its main partners,” he said authoritatively.

The director appealed to the parents to remain calm and promised to investigate the matter and find a solution for peace to prevail in the school.

He asked the school Boards of Management to be in the forefront in the peace building peace between the teacher and parents instead of joining the masses to harass the educators who is the custodians of their children’s knowledge
