Kisii County Woman Representative, Doris Aburi, has told residents to support and value the education of the girl in order to emancipate her from long running social and economic injustices.

She said that her office’s priority will be to uplift the education of children especially the girl, saying educating a girl is tantamount to educating the whole nation.

The Woman Representative was flanked by nominated Senator, Essy Okenyuri at Kenyenya Stadium on Wednesday during the celebration of International Women’s Day.

She appealed to the men to attend such celebrations in order to encourage and motivate women on the great strides they have taken to better all odds of traditional segregations.

“We love and cherish our men but I call them to attend functions like this because our success depends on their support. I appeal to them to avoid suffering from gender equality inferiority,” she insisted.

She revealed that her offices had started a grand programme of empowering widows, orphans and people with disability by providing them with farm inputs to enable them produce food for self-sustenance.

She encouraged farmers to embark on bee keeping so as to get good income because it does not demand much care or starting capital.

“The Affirmative Action Funds alone from my office will not be enough that is why I had to walk and extra mile and introduce this Reach-Rural People Programme,” she said.

She disclosed that her office had spent more than Ksh.1 million to enable children from poor homes to join Form One.

She reiterated the importance of supporting girls to further their education saying, great women like the Chief Justice Martha Kome, former Liberian President, Hellen Johnson and Uganda’s first lady Janet Museven who is the Minister for Education are good example of ‘what man can do also woman can do.’

“My programme is meant to give them a fishing hook instead of the provision of fish,” she remarked.

During the well-attended meeting, the residents were educated on the modern methods of farming by Syngenta Farm Implements, an herbicides and insecticide manufacturing company.

Former Bokimonge Ward MCA, George Bibao, lauded the Woman Representative for Championing the welfare of the disadvantaged in the society and asked other leaders to emulate her.

He asked the Kisii County governor Simba Arati to establish an elaborate programme that will take care of the vulnaranle people in society.
