MPs want gov’t to do away with CBC

By Erick Nyayiera

A section of Azimio la Umoja coalition Members of Parliament are now calling for immediate suspension of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

The MPs led by National Assembly’s Minority leader, James Opiyo Wandayi, argues that the implementation of CBC seems to have failed owing to the haphazard manner in which the curriculum is being undertaken.

While arguing that it is unfair for the government to continue using Kenyan children for experiment, Wandayi stated that the government should admit that the system has failed to take off and revert back to the old system as they find possible ways of implementing CBC in future.

He added that the recent admission by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu that over 160,000 students are still unable to transit to Junior Secondary School and Form One respectively is a clear indication that the system has failed.

Wandayi who is also the MP for Ugunja says that there is need for a national dialogue to chart the way forward in regards to the system of education that should be implemented in this country.

He was speaking in his Ugunja Constituency where Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera and his Mumias East counterpart Peter Salasya lamented that the Kenya Kwanza government has been completely unable to release funds for development, including money for employment of additional Junior Secondary School teachers.

They have therefore reiterated the need for a quick stakeholders’ meeting to save the education sector in the country from crumbling.
