New commissioner pledges to improve education sector

By Oanga Oyugi

The newly posted Kisii County Commissioner Tom Anjere has promised to mobilize local leaders in a bid to improve the education and security sector in the expansive region which has been experiencing problems in the recent months.

Speaking at Kisii Primary School during a sensitization tour, Anjere who was accompanied by hosting MCAs Wilfred Monyenye, Moindi Gekanana and Marriam Musa, commended the management of various school committees for laying a stable foundation for Junior Secondary School (JSS) education in the area.

So far, Kisii Primary has the highest registration number of JSS enrolments with 182 students against three teachers, according to Principal James Mitunda.

It is closely followed by St. Patrick’s junior secondary with 153 students against five teachers where the Principal Nahason Ooga said that the Ministry has promised to post five more teachers to help cover all the subjects which have been introduced.

During the sensitization tour, Anjere advised all alumni from the area schools to unite in building their former schools so the region maintains its top status in national examination performance.

Principal Mitunda noted that the school has four streams, a population of 1,200 pupils in the primary section with thirty five teachers but it requires four more teachers and a major facelift.
