Local leaders urged to improve adult education in Kwale

Leaders in Kwale County have been urged to cooperate with village elders to improve enrollment in literacy centers in the region.

Speaking to Education News in Kwale town recently, Kwale County Director of Adult Education, Mr. David Thengele said that although the enrolment in literacy centers has gone up there was room for improvement.

He lamented that many literacy centers in the county lacked learners, a situation which is of great concern.

The Director said that the government had already employed enough teachers in the county in a bid to eradicate illiteracy.

“You are therefore duty bound to recruit more adult learners to learn in the literacy centers to enhance education levels in the county,” he told adult education stakeholders.

At the same time, he urged parents in the county to enroll their children who dropped out of school to literacy centers to continue with their education.

Mr. Thengele disclosed that the adult learners in the centres will be registered by the Ministry of Education to sit for both Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

He noted that the county’s rapid development needed educated people who will be charged with the responsibility of designing, planning and implementing community development projects.
